What is GatkaGatka is an ancient battle-tested armed martial art which originated in India. No one really knows the exact beginnings of the art however there are two main theories. One states that Gatka is part of an ancient science of warfare known as 'Shashtar Vidiya' and the other assumes that Gatka was developed by the Sikhs around the time of the sixth Sikh Guru 'Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji'. Neither of the two theories can be proved and we at BDSG prefer to concentrate on the art itself rather than debate these issues. What we do know is that Gatka was adopted by the Sikhs of Punjab to defend against Moghul oppression in India during the time of the Sixth Sikh Guru. The effectiveness of Gatka has been proven with victories over the Gurkha hill chiefs, Afghanistani invaders and the armies of the Moghul empire in India.
